Every day is hump day - Camel Case for digital accessibility

Hooray For Neigh makes no secret of my own disabilities. I have been a beneficiary of digital accessibility as well as a practitioner of applying it, professionally. On this hump day, I want to talk to all of you about digital accessibility. Specifically, Camel Case.

What is that? Camel Case is capitalizing the first letter of each word in a string of text without spaces.

Why would I use it? Camel Case is used in coding to make code strings easier to read. It's used in Java, Python, and lots of other programming languages. It is also used in digital accessibility for a variety of reasons, not the least of which is it makes hashtags easier to read.

Who needs it? Anyone with a cognitive or visual disability, whether dyslexic, ADHD, ASD, low vision, no vision, and people with sensory processing disorders, to name but a few. A screen reader can read a Camel Case hashtag accurately. A snake case hashtag, not so much. And, most people in general have an easier time with Camel Case. And, side note, it isn't only people with visual disabilities that use screen readers. Many people with cognitive disabilities use them, too. And people who use screen readers also use social media.

Here's an example of snake case vs. Camel Case:

Which was easier for you to read?

Roughly 25% of the world's population has a disability of one or more forms. There are also many equestrians who identify as having a disability of one or more forms.

Inclusion is for everyone, everywhere. Consider using Camel Case so more people can enjoy your content.
